What to Look For When Buying a New Furnace:

RUUD - Trane
  • Gas furnaces with higher AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rates (up to 95.0%) means more gas is converted into heat, thus costing less to heat your home.

  • An electric ignition eliminates the need for a constantly burning pilot. This feature alone gives up to 6% higher efficiency. And in combination with an induced-draft blower, can improve furnace efficiencies by over 20%.

  • Important features include corrosion resistant heat exchangers, direct-drive blower units, induced draft blowers, safety switches, and an insulated blower compartment to helps minimize noise.

  • And be sure to ask about the terms of the warranty. Quality manufacturers put an aggressive warranty behind their furnace.

What's heating your home

Most homes in the portland metro area are heated with either a gas furnace, electric furnace, or an oil furnace. Oil, electric or gas furnaces work by heating the air and then distributing the heated air through a system of ducts in the house. Its efficiency is rated by something known as an “annual fuel utilization efficiency” (AFUE). Simply put, AFUE is a measure of how efficiently an appliance utilizes its energy source (fuel) during the course of a typical year. The higher the AFUE rating, the more fuel is turned into heat and the less fuel is lost due to inefficiency.

How much savings can you get?

Choosing an electric furnace or a gas furnace will also affect your overall energy savings (oil furnaces are passé). A furnace that’s run by electricity has an AFUE rating of between 95% and 100% because there is no chimney flue involved to contribute to fuel loss. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a furnace,.

Many Furnace types, which ones right for you?

There are four basic types of furnaces: Single-Stage Furnace, Two-Stage Furnace, Two-Stage Variable Speed Furnace, and Modulating Variable Speed Furnace. Each of these furnaces perform well when in the right environment and a professional from Tri County Temp Control can help you decide which size and type of furnace will best suit your Portland home.
